7 reasons why an in-house lawyer may be a good idea for your business

Does your business regularly engage firms of solicitors for routine legal work? In my first blog for SPB Legal, I set out 7 reasons why it might benefit you instead to engage your own in-house lawyer. Over the coming weeks, I will explore each of the reasons in more detail but here are the seven reasons:

1. You will receive more relevant and useful advice because an in-house will better understand your business and the issues it faces.

2. Your finance director will be happy because your legal spend will be slashed, especially as regards routine legal work.

3. The advice you receive will be naturally more commercial and focussed on your specific business problems.

4. You can avoid expensive problems before they arise because an in-house lawyer is better placed to be pro-active rather than reactive.

5. Your operations people will be happy because an inhouse lawyer will speak their language.

6. Your business will be able to re-act quicker because an in-house lawyer is better placed to advise quickly.

7. You can avoid silly and potentially expensive mistakes because your in-house lawyer can provide a useful second pair of eyes.

To my friends in private practice and, particularly, to the firms of solicitors I work with, this is not intended as an attack on the whole of traditional private practice law firms. Many fully understand the spaces in which they should be operating and accordingly provide much appreciated and valuable services. However, many others are failing to recognise how quickly legal services are changing and this will only speed-up in a post-Covid world. Much more of this at a later date!
